Can I trust a bot?

Here’s now to know whether or not you can trust any technology tool or application:

  • See if the tech company’s website includes any documentation related to data privacy or trust.
  • Identify on those pages (if they exist) that they have at least one these:
  1. ISO 27001 compliance: the international standard for information security. Organisations must identify security risks and select appropriate controls to mitigate them. Verify at https://www.iafcertsearch.org/
  2. SOC 2 certification: a security framework (most common in the USA) that specifies how organisations should protect customer data from unauthorised access, security incidents and other vulnerabilities. To verify if it is legit, you can request their report, which is written by an independent auditor.
  3. GDPR: a legal framework (used throughout the European Union) that sets guidelines for the collection and processing of personal information from individuals who live in and outside of the EU.

If tech companies have these certifications, they likely are bragging about them somewhere on their sites—especially if they are a small business. The process of obtaining these is north of US$10K per year in tools and/or personnel. Auditor fees of at least US$8K per year sit on top of that.

Have your bots been ethically trained? How do I know they’re not stealing other people’s intellectual property?

A: TeacherPA uses basic information from various Large Language Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT. To the extent you trust them, you can trust our bot agents. They have been engineered to prioritise web sources that we trust.

As we develop TeacherPA, we will simultaneously develop our own language model that will be trained with education-specific material from leading educators and experts worldwide.
